As part of an ongoing personal project of his, Toby Allen created these manifestations of "Real Monsters" - aka mental health issues, disorders and illnesses personified. He's done an amazing job and provided some wonderful insights.
Take some time to explore each of these, and see if you can find your own. But also remember that, no matter your labels, everyon's monsters are different - for example, my experience with depression is very different to some other people's. Try and visualise what your personal monster/s look like - and remember to make them beautiful, to you.
That's really all that matters.
I'll be posting blog entires about a few of these, including the best ways to address the monsters AS monsters, from my own personal knowledge and the research of others, from as many reputable sources as I can find. This will, of course, take some time, so thankyou in advance for your patience.

TOby Allen's "Real Monsters"
Do you find your mind overwhelmed, sometimes, with anxiety, depression, cruel or self-deprecating thoughts and words? Or perhaps a treacle-thick darkness, threatening to overwhelm you?
Well, I do. And if you do, too, know this:
you're not alone.

This is a blog to talk about that darkness. I love to personify things - everything, ever. So it makes sense to me to personify the Darkness, and all its vicious and gurgling voices. Because that cold and painful mental landscape...

there's so much more to us than that.

It's easy, in a broken mental state, to forget that we are worthy
of love and goodness - and offering ourselves those things, as well as
accepting it from others.
By personifying our mental health issues, we are presented with a unique opportunity: to show love, patience and kindness to these monsters;
to nurture these things. They are a part of us.
We can actually get along with them.
So, come and take a look at the Monsters with me.
We'll learn what they are, and what we can do
to tame, train and engage them.
How to get along with voices of unreason.
How to draw strengths from a well that's long been empty.

However!
I am NOT a doctor.
This blog will not magically fix the broken.
But, I am hoping it will help. I believe that if I share my experiences, insights
and ongoing research, it will help people see that they aren't as isolated, as alone, as their own experiences and personal Monsters make them feel.
Here,
I dip my digital toes
in the proverbial pools of
spiritual wisdom, health and wellbeing.
I hope to create and provide a place where
people who suffer this way can find content they relate to,
and help to reframe the judgement we face, and the shame that we carry
in our hearts - that the Monsters like
to use against us.
This is a place where realness and rawness come to thrive,
and stigma comes to die.

Being out of your mind
with a head full of monsters...
It's hard, but, I'm here to tell you:
it's going to be ok.

Distractions!
When I'm really down, I find that distractions can be wonderful things.
I think, if you're going to use something to escape reality,
it might as well be free.

Therefore, I'm sharing my personal favourite distractions.
Please feel free to message yours in as well! The more distractions I know of,
the more variety this page will have to offer!

At this stage, I'll just list a couple of things here, with
a link to my most favourite.

It's meditative and endless and it's like Snake crossed with
Tag and I am super into it. But also, I like mindless
games like that, including Minesweeper
and Wordament
Other than that, reading, puzzles, colouring, drawing...
anything that requires both complete focus
and while also being low in stress
is a great way to start
when your head is full of monsters.

What Is Depression?
